Manchester City reach Champions League semi-finals
Alvarez and Haaland goals see 10-man City through
Foden stars as City beat United
First half goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland helped 10-man City return to the Champions League semi-finals with a 4-1 aggregate win over Atletico Madrid.
The Premier League champions were in control from the off and took the lead after 18 minutes when Alvarez fired home from close range. Haaland doubled the lead 10 minutes later with a powerful header from Kevin De Bruyne’s cross.
Atletico pulled a goal back just before half-time through Antoine Griezmann, but City remained in control and saw out the win comfortably. The result means that City will face Real Madrid in the semi-finals, while Atletico are out of the competition.
In other news, Manchester United’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League were dealt a blow as they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City at Old Trafford.
Goals from Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva condemned United to their fourth defeat in their last five league games and left them seven points adrift of fourth-placed Arsenal with just five games remaining.
Manchester City will be looking to secure the Premier League title when they host West Ham United on the final day of the season. Kick-off at the Etihad Stadium is at 4pm local time.
